Stand-up comedian and actor Howie Michael Mandel was born November 29, 1955, in Toronto, Ontario. Unlike many of his acting peers, Mandel did not begin life with starry eyes and aspirations to be on the big screen. In fact, before he ever set foot upon a stage, he actually ran a carpet business.

In this way, Mandel’s fame seemed to spring largely by chance. He and his friends were on vacation in Los Angeles when they attended amateur night at a local comedy club. Upon the insistence of his friends, Mandel took the stage. A producer liked what he saw and cast him on a little-known game show, Make Me Laugh.

But it wasn’t until 1982 that Mandel became a familiar face. From 1982 to 1988, Mandel starred as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the medical drama St. Elsewhere. Other stars-before-they-were-stars who graced the set of St. Elsewhere include Helen Hunt, Ed Begley Jr., Denzel Washington, Michael Richards, Eric Stoltz, and Timothy Robbins.

Mandel’s next notable project was voicing the cute but dangerous creature in Gremlins in 1984. However, it wasn’t until 1990 that he truly became a household name. Capitalizing on his love for children, Mandel devoted his creative energy, producing skills, and voice talent to the animated series Bobby’s World, a highly successful show that ran from 1990 to 1998. And with the resurgence of Mandel’s fame, there are even rumors circulating new episodes of the show will be aired as early as January of 2007. The show also featured the voice talents of Nancy Cartwright (known often only as Bart from The Simpsons), Pauly Shore, and Edie McClurg (the secretary from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, starring Matthew Broderick).

Currently, Mandel can be found on NBC’s new hit game show Deal or No Deal. He is also in post-production for three films including Walk Two Moons, opposite Blythe Danner, the mother of Gwyneth Paltrow.

And if you happen to be a fan of Deal or No Deal, you may have found it odd that Mandel never shakes hands with any of the contestants. In fact, he maintains an exceedingly small amount of contact with them. This is because Mandel suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder as well as mysophobia, which is the fear of germs. He is also colorblind.

Mandel married his wife, Terry, in March of 1980. They have three children together and are still married.
