Stephen Andrew Baldwin (born 12 May 1966) is an American actor best known for his role in the 1995 ensemble film The Usual Suspects.
Biography
Early Life
Baldwin was born in Massapequa, New York, the son of Carol Newcomb (née Martineau), a breast cancer survivor who founded the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center of the University Hospital and Medical Center at Stony Brook, and Alexander Rae Baldwin, Jr., a high school history and social studies teacher and a football coach. Stephen Baldwin is the brother of notable actors, Alec, Daniel and William, sometimes collectively known as the “Baldwin brothers.” Baldwin was raised in a Roman Catholic family and is of Irish, English and French descent.
Career
During his time at Berner High School, Baldwin was a successful opera singer. After high school, he attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for one year. He played small roles in shows like Kate and Allie, “America’s Most Wanted” and Family Ties before landing his first adult feature film role, in the 1988 film The Beast of War. That role led to other parts, in the 1989 films Last Exit to Brooklyn and Born on the Fourth of July, as well as the television series The Young Riders. In 1995 he landed a breakthrough role in The Usual Suspects. Baldwin’s next role was in 1996’s Bio-Dome.
In 2000, Baldwin recorded a novelty dance track entitled, “My 18 Inch Biceps” that quickly became an internet sensation. The song, about none other than his fan-adored muscular build, became an overnight Top 10 hit on several online music charts. However, having never been released as an official single, it failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2002, Baldwin participated in Celebrity Mole Hawaii, the first celebrity edition of The Mole. ABC broadcast the program in early 2003. Later that year he returned for Celebrity Mole Yucatan, which ABC aired in early 2004.
In September 2006, Baldwin released a book titled The Unusual Suspect, which details highlights from his personal life, career, days of drug abuse and ultimately his conversion to Christianity. In the same year he, Mario D’Ortenzio, and Bobby Brewer founded Breakthrough Ministries which was designed to utilize extreme sports as a ministry via arena tours which were referred to as AsSalt Tours and featured extreme sports celebrities with Christian Hosoi being the most notable. Breakthrough Ministries was disbanded in late 2008 and relaunched under the name Antioch Ministries.
In August 2007, Baldwin was back on television when CMT cast him in Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge, one of nine celebrities cast.[6] In the first episode, Baldwin was injured in a bad fall from a wooden pontoon, breaking his shoulder blade and cracking a rib. Under doctor’s orders, he left the show in the second episode.
From January-March 2008, Baldwin appeared on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, Season 7, on NBC. Baldwin end-up being fifth, out of the 13 celebrity contestants and one contestant Trump highly over-rated.
Baldwin has teamed up with conservative Christian talk-radio host Kevin McCullough and put together a weekly radio show called, “Baldwin/McCullough Xtreme Radio,” airing on 21 stations across the country.
Baldwin and Trace Adkins became friends while competing on Celebrity Apprentice. In October 2008, Baldwin appeared in the Adkins’ music video, “Muddy Water.”
On October 18, 2008, Republican vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin joked with lifelong Democrat Alec Baldwin during a Saturday Night Live skit that Stephen is her “favorite Baldwin brother.”
Personal life
Baldwin became a born-again Christian shortly after the September 11 attacks.[9][10] Since converting, he has sought to evangelize young people through projects such as The Breakthrough Ministry, which involves skateboarding and extreme sports, Christian rock concerts, laser light shows and fireworks. He talks frequently about his conversion experience. See his video on Iamsecond.com.
As a political conservative, he was an outspoken supporter of the McCain-Palin presidential ticket for 2008, after Mike Huckabee dropped out of the presidential race. On October 30, 2008, Baldwin made an appearance on the Ron and Fez Show where he gave subtle hints that he believed that Barack Obama may be the Antichrist after an epiphany he had during an intense period of prayer and meditation, but was told by the Holy Spirit that his revelation is not to be spoken of.[citation needed] Baldwin pledged he would leave America[12] should Barack Obama win the Presidency. Stephen later claimed he was joking when he made the pledge, supposedly poking fun at an Alec Baldwin statement made in 2000 regarding Bush.
He resides in the village of Nyack, New York, with his wife, Kennya, and their family. In 2006, he launched a campaign to prevent an adult bookstore from opening in Nyack.[13]
Physical fitness has always been big with Stephen Baldwin. While online polls have tended to award “sexiest Baldwin” or “most handsome” to older brothers Billy or Alec, it is Stephen who usually gets the votes for the best body. Such was the subject of his novelty internet hit from 2000–“My 18 Inch Biceps.”
Stephen is an avid hat lover and is said to possess over 1000 hats.
He has a tattoo on his left shoulder of the initials “HM” for Hannah Montana. His daughters are fans of Hannah Montana, and he got the tattoo after making a pact with Miley Cyrus that he would be allowed to cameo on the show if he had the initials tattooed on him. He revealed the tattoo to Miley at a book signing in Nashville, TN on November 10, 2008.
