To remarque or not to remarque. That is the question. There has been a growing trend in the past few years of artists creating a remarque within a book after its publication.

What is a remarqued book?

Simply put, a remarque is a small drawing created on a larger piece of work. This is usually what an illustrator would do by hand, or by a print in some cases. In some rare instances, a remarque may be a full-blown color sketch that takes up an entire page. Either way, it’s an original piece of work by the artist that also adds their personal signature.

The remarque usually adds a special value to a book because it is a one-of-a-kind original. This can be a detailed finished black-white or color drawing that ties in with the subject matter of the novel and is personally signed and perhaps dated by the illustrator.

Remarquing is only done on a select few books of each edition, thus making them highly collectible. It can also be obtained by sending in your book directly to the artist. Usually they will charge a fee for their time and effort that goes into the process.

When  dealing with book remarques, however, there is no true consensus on this topic. Some book collectors prefer to have this additional feature added to their book, while others prefer their books to be untouched and original, and in the same state as it was produced.

I have several Tony Hillerman novels, each with a remarque by Navajo artist Ernest Franklin. They are beautiful an add to the book.
